The liver plays a vital role in the natural detoxification system of your body. The second largest organ in the human body, one of the major functions of the liver is to filter the harmful toxins out of the bloodstream. By turning fat-soluble toxins into water-soluble toxins, the liver is able to prevent those harmful toxins to be absorbed by the fat tissues and cells of the body. The body also gets help from your liver in storing and regulating your intake of essential vitamins and minerals. The liver also helps metabolize fats in your body, regulate hormones and balances your cholesterol level.
Because of the many functions of the liver, you need to keep it healthy to prevent it from wearing down and later put your health at risk. You can detoxify your liver through medical processes but there are also natural ways to keep your liver in shape.
Improve your diet by eating healthy foods. It is better to have a plant-based diet with lot of fruits and vegetables; they are great sources of fiber. Include oatmeal and brown rice as well, they are healthy because they are rich in complex carbohydrates. Eat chicken, fish, beans and eggs for your lean protein requirements. For proper digestion of protein, include lemon to your dishes as often as possible. Eat foods that will provide you essential vitamins and minerals such as selenium, iron, sulphate, magnesium, folate and B-vitamins. Eat vegetables daily particularly those that provide nutrients to the liver. Spinach and other dark leafy greens contain beta-carotene that increase the growth of liver cells and gives the liver protection from harmful toxins. Other vegies that are good for the liver include chicory, mustard greens, bitter gourd, arugula and dandelion greens. Garlic is also liver friendly and so are grapefruits, avocados and walnuts.
Live a healthy lifestyle. The liver will deteriorate fast if you continue smoking and drinking. Taking drugs is damaging to the liver as well, even excessive taking of prescription drugs. Too much partying and drinking may result to lack of sleep and this is harmful to the liver too. You will be doing your liver a great favor if you can avoid these unhealthy habits. Kick the smoking habit. Social drinking is acceptable every once in a while. Taking prescription and over-the-counter drugs should be done only if it is absolutely needed. As much as possible, avoid stress because it can also harm the liver. Here are some stress-causing agents that you should avoid.
One of the most common and natural way to keep your liver in shape is to drink lots of water. It helps a lot in detoxifying the liver and flushing out toxins. There are lots of benefits of drinking plenty of water. It helps stimulate cell regeneration and improve liver functions. Water not only hydrates the body but increases your energy level too. Avoid drinking alcohol and caffeinated drinks or at least keep it to a minimum. In addition to water, drink lemon juice and green tea. Lemon juice helps increase the production of bile and aids in flushing out of toxins. Green tea contains catechins, an antioxidant that helps improve liver functions. If you are to drink fruit smoothies, choose strawberries, blackberries, blueberries, and raspberries because these are healthy fruits for the liver. These berries are also recommended foods to eat if you want to avoid gout.
Keep the liver healthy through exercise. The lymph nodes in your body are activated when you exercise thus you sweat, breathe and urinate more. This means you are helping the liver flush out toxins from your body. Breathing more means you bring more oxygen to your body. This stimulates blood circulation and helps remove waste from the blood.
Keep your liver from overworking by avoiding toxic chemicals. Exposure to chemicals like paint, insecticides, fungicides and house cleaning products can be harmful not just for the liver but for your health as a whole. To reduce exposure, you can use globes or wear a mask. Make sure that the area is well ventilated as well. Use house cleaning and personal hygiene products with natural ingredients.
