Steam and Cough it Out
A very common and effective way to help expel the phlegm is by steaming it out. This is a natural remedy for chest congestion and buildup of phlegm. Add 2-3 drops of eucalyptus oil in boiling water. The trick is to put a towel or any piece of cloth on your head and try to breathe in as much steam as possible from the boiling water. The steam will help soften the phlegm so it will be easier to cough up and spit out the phlegm, thus clearing the bronchial passages.

Fresh Garlic
In the field of alternative medicine, garlic is known as an effective expectorant. The key is to use fresh garlic. The garlic helps kill the bacteria and expel the mucus off your throat. It would be better if you can eat a few cloves of raw garlic as it is, but if not, you can slice it and mix it with the foods you eat. An alternative to herbal tea is hot lemon drink which is a mixture of 2 teaspoons of lemon juice and a tablespoon of honey in a cup of hot water.

Another natural way to battle mucus production is eating turmeric. Turmeric is a yellow spice made from the dried rhizomes which is a tropical Asian plant of the ginger family. It has a natural antibacterial capacity to destroy bacteria in your body. You can take a few teaspoons of turmeric daily for a couple of days to help you get rid of phlegm.

One of the most commonly used natural ways to get rid of phlegm is eating ginger or drinking ginger tea.
