Pharynx is the tube that extends from the back of the mouth to the esophagus. You have sore throat when your pharynx is swollen. Having sore throat is uncomfortable. Sore throat can also be caused by bacterial infections that can lead to more serious health problems. The symptoms of bacterial infections are generally the same with that of the viral infections but more severe and last longer so it is better to consult a doctor and seek medical help. Natural Treatment for Sore Throat
Saltwater gargle is an old natural treatment for sore throat. Dissolve ½ teaspoon of salt in 1 cup or glass of warm water. You gargle the salt water mixture a number of times within the day to help reduce the swelling in the throat. The gargling will also help loosen any mucus present so that bacteria and other irritants will be flushed easily. To lessen the unpleasant salty taste, you can sweeten the mixture by adding a teaspoon or so of honey. Remember though not to swallow the saltwater after gargling.
The apple cider remedy is great for several health issues including sore throat. According to some doctors, the concoction tastes pleasant and works effectively. However, any food or beverage that contains honey is not recommended for children below 2 years old. They may not be old enough to handle any allergic reactions brought by honey. Add 1 tablespoon of apple cider vinegar and 1 tablespoon of honey to a glass of warm water and drink it slowly.
Drink Plenty of Water
When you have sore throat, keeping hydrated is very important. As much as possible, keep the fluids coming. Drink 8-10 glasses of water to lubricate your throat throughout the day. Drinking enough fluids will keep the throat from drying and avoid further irritation. Light yellow or clear urine is an indication that you are drinking enough fluids. To fight sore throat infections, bacteria and other irritants, always drink water and other fluids like tea to keep the mucous membranes always moist.
Another natural treatment for sore throat is the use of herbal remedy. Garlic, licorice root and marshmallow plant have long been used as herbal remedies for sore throat. Use a fresh clove of garlic. Peel it and cut in half. Suck on the garlic just like sucking on a hard candy. Once in a while slightly bite the garlic, slight enough not to cut it in half because you only want to release the allicin which can fight the bacteria that cause the sore throat. Just like the garlic, licorice root has long been used to relieve sore throat. Tea with licorice is good for sore throat. You can also add marshmallow plant root to boiling water and drink it to relieve sore throat.
Take Some Rest
One of the simplest solutions to sore throat or any infection for that matter is to rest. Normally, cold virus causes sore throat, and there is no specific treatment for cold virus. The best thing to do is give your body the much needed rest to help you feel better as soon as possible. You can stay in bed for quite some time or at least just stay at home to rest. This way, you can recharge your body to help improve your immune system and be able to fight any virus. If the sore throat is not a serious case, getting some rest could go a long way for your fast recovery.
