This red little fruit that reminds you of a sea urchin has a seed covered with white juicy flesh inside. The scientific name of rambutan is Nephelium Lappaceum and is related to the families of longan and lychee. Aside from being nutritious and delicious, the rambutan also has quite a lot of health benefits.

In most parts of Malaysia and Indonesia where rambutan is widely grown, the fruit is used as ingredient for their traditional medicines. Rambutan is used for treatment of several health conditions including high blood pressure and diabetes. Rambutan is much enriched with vitamin C which helps destroy free radicals in the body. Vitamin C also helps the body to absorb copper and iron properly thus improving the production of blood cells. Plant-based antioxidants called flavonoids are also present in the skin, seeds and pulp of the rambutan. Flavonoids help lower cholesterol levels and at the same time, these antioxidants are anti-inflammatory and anti-carcinogenic.

A compound called gallic acid is found on the skin of rambutan. Gallic acid can do wonders in eliminating the free radicals in the cells. Rambutan also offers something great for hair and skin care. If you want your skin to be healthier and softer and you want a gentle skin tone on your face, you can eat the seeds raw or have them crushed to be mixed with your food. On the other hand, you can use the leaves of the rambutan plant for thicker hair. Get some clean leaves, put a little water and crush or pound it until you create a paste-like mixture. Using a clean cloth as strainer, squish the liquid out of it and you can use the liquid to massage your scalp. Make sure you have enough to use for a couple of days to help hair regrow faster.

Cure for Dysentery and Fever
The skin of the rambutan can be used for treatment of dysentery and fever. Dysentery is a serious disease that affects your bowels and makes you go to the toilet very frequently and become very weak. Cut the skin of the rambutan into small pieces, add water and let it boil. Simmer until it is half of the original amount of water. Let it cool and strain the skin. You can drink the water or liquid two times a day until you get better. Using the same procedure, you can drink the boiled water when you have fever to make you feel better.

The rambutan is also good for your bones. Aside from having high content of vitamin C, rambutan is also rich in calcium that can help strengthen your bones. Rambutan also contains prolific amount of phosphorus and iron that can enhance your bone health.
