Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) is more commonly known as acid reflux. It is also referred to as indigestion, heartburn and dyspepsia. When you have acid reflux, you feel a burning sensation in your stomach all the way to the chest. That burning feeling is caused by digestive acids. You experience acid reflux when the sphincter muscle between the stomach and the esophagus won’t close due to physical deformity. Acid reflux can also be the result of overeating or when you had too much of acid-forming foods.
In today’s modern and busy world, people normally rely on antacid to relieve acid reflux. However, too much dependency on antacid could just worsen your condition because your body will just be producing more acid. There are certain foods that can cause an increase in acid reflux symptoms. The list includes deep-fried foods, tomato based products, citrus juices, carbonated drinks, high-fat meats, chocolates and caffeinated beverages. While avoiding these foods is an effective way to avert acid reflux, another delightful way is to eat foods that help prevent acid reflux.
Cheese, Yogurt and Milk
Include these three in your diet and enjoy a delectable way to prevent acid reflux. These three delicious food choices are indeed very effective. If you are to choose a fast-acting food to stop acid reflux, these dairy products which are rich in acid-neutralizing calcium should be on top of the list. Eat calcium-rich foods if you want fast and longer relief from the symptoms of acid reflux. Calcium is an active ingredient of most over the counter antacids because it is a high potent alkaline. Eating or drinking the right amount of cheese, yogurt and milk will keep you from getting acid reflux. Normally, dairy products are high in fat so keep in mind to choose the fat-free or low in fat variety of such dairy products.
Fruits (But not all!)
It may not occur to you at first that fruits can prevent acid reflux, but actually they can. However, you cannot just use or eat any fruit to stop acid reflux. There are particular fruits that can do the trick and relieve the symptoms of acid reflux. Bananas for instance can help correct the imbalances in the stomach that cause acid reflux. Eating banana can also help soothe the irritation in your throat due to the acid. If there is an existing case of acid reflux, eat the banana slowly so that you will not overfill your stomach and aggravate the condition. Apples, figs and watermelon are also alkaline in nature. You can regularly drink papaya juice and pineapple juice to help prevent acid reflux. Because it is in the juice form, people would claim that the body will absorb it faster and will work faster. Although this idea has not been scientifically proven, it is still worth a try especially if it is available when acid reflux attacks. Fruits that can make the condition worse are citrus fruits including grapefruit, lemons and oranges.
To prevent acid reflux, munch 5-6 almonds every day preferably during breakfast to protect your stomach from acid reflux during the course of the day. Take note that for the almonds to work effectively they must be eaten raw, no salt or any other preservatives added.
Vegetables and Salad
To help improve the symptoms of acid reflux, include green vegetables to your diet such as green peas, celery, carrots, cabbage and broccoli. You can mix your veggies to make a salad for a more scrumptious meal, just remember not to include onions and tomatoes. Baked potato is an excellent addition to your diet as well.
To repair a damaged sphincter which is a major cause of acid reflux, enjoy 2-3 teaspoons of honey daily and see a positive change to the condition in no time. You can eat the honey as it is or mix it with other foods that help prevent acid reflux as mentioned above.
